Learn the Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that requires both luck and skill to win. Over time, practice and proper strategy will eliminate the element of chance and allow you to control your chances of winning more often.

When learning poker, it is best to start small and work your way up. Begin by reading a book on the theory, downloading a free poker app and watching some YouTube videos. Once you have a solid foundation, begin playing for real money.

In poker, players are each dealt 2 cards and then a betting round begins. A player can choose to call the amount of chips being put into the pot by the person to their left, raise the amount being put into the pot, or push their cards into the dealer face down without putting any chips in (fold).

The fourth card is then dealt face up, known as the turn. Players can again choose to call the amount of chips being put in, raise the amount being put in or push their cards into the dealer face down (fold).

When making decisions, it is important to think in terms of ranges. Beginners will often try to put their opponent on a hand and play against it, which is fine, but this should be done in conjunction with considering how many hands your opponents can make. This will give you a better understanding of your opponent and how to play against them.
